Despite my father’s progressive illness, he lived each day with vigor. He taught me about humility and I have him to forever thank for that….
When I was old enough to drive and he no longer could, I took him to all his medical appointments. I learned the medical lingo at an early age and got smitten for the love of medicine. I knew in my bones way back then that I would be in medicine somewhere someday.
My father was a researcher and a quest for knowledge type of guy (wonder where I got those traits from…wink wink?) so he set out looking for his own answers and treatments. Because my mom worked to support us, I was my dad’s sidekick and went everywhere with him. If there was a new nutrition plan that he found that may help we as a family adopted it.
My story began when I was a young girl. I was the only child of two entrepreneurial parents. My dad was ill from as far back as I can remember. He slowly became paralyzed from the waist down over time and back then the doctors didn’t really know why.
My dad passed away my last year of nursing school and that is when I began questioning my choice of becoming a nurse and not a doctor. My mom encouraged me to finish and get my nursing degree with these wise words...
Long story, so for now I’ll give you the readers digest version for the sake of time. Even though my dad saw doctors, the people that he spent the most time with and got the most answers and support from were nurses whom I grew to love and held great admiration for, so going to nursing school was a no brainer for me.
At this point you may be wondering why I became a nurse practitioner and not a doctor. Ahh…great question…
As you get to know me you will come to find out that I am a spiritual woman and that I believe that each and everyone one of us is given gifts and talents in which to serve the world we live in. Since I was in college I have felt GOD calling my heart to serve women in the medical field. I have also always felt that who understands a woman’s body better than another woman. As a female practicing women’s health I have the ability to sympathize and even empathize at times with what my women clients have and are going through.
Two years into nursing I knew I wanted more, I wanted to be able to take total care of the patient and give the orders instead of taking them. I started researching and heard of a new emerging role in the field of nursing called a nurse practitioner. It was the blending of two worlds that I loved- the teaching and humanity side of nursing with the practicing side of medicine. And here I am today :)
I use my years of professional experience to do the researching and sifting for you. I then apply my skills as both a teacher and a thought leader to foster change, and provide you with the support you need to achieve real lasting results.
However, understanding your body as a woman shouldn’t take you having to get a medical degree.
Over the course of my career I have seen how healthcare has changed, especially over the past several years, not for the better in my opinion. With today’s ever changing healthcare climate it is paramount that you become your #1 Self-Care Advocate and the way you do this is by learning and understanding your health as it pertains to you as a woman.
